The Basics:
All Webpages Require at least 3 things:
Domain - The domain is that physical address of your website. The www.example.com of the internet. Domain's generally cost $20-$30 a year. While this might sound steep, remember that security is something of an issue on the internet and you want to make sure that you register through a stand up company. Most large companies will offer security for the domain registrants (part of the reason the cost is a bit higher) to help keep them from being spammed with email and phone calls. I always recommend that when all business has concluded that the domain be transfered to the web site owner, so the developer is not responsible for it. I am perfectly willing to help set the domain up and then transfer it to my clients at the completion of our business.
Host - The host is "where" your webpage is. If the domain is the address, the host is the house itself. Where you keep all your "stuff" while it floats out there in cyberspace. Its a hard drive that you can access remotely. There are literally thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of choices for hosting. MikeMadison.Net offers hosting at great prices. Regardless of who you host through, you will need to have some form of hosting for a site. Please confer with your designer BEFORE purchasing hosting. EXAMPLE: The starter package from MikeMadison.Net is sufficient for some types of webpages, however if you want to do anything related to Content Management (IE WORDPRESS) or a Wiki or Message Board (basically anything other than basic html) You will need to go with the Basic or Pro package. To be safe, please make sure you have laid out what exactly you would like done on the site before you purchase hosting.
Code - Whether the site is coded in simple html, or its a flash site, or some combination (as most sites are) you will need something to actually lay out the site. While FrontPage and Dreamweaver are both excellent programs, in many cases, especially for businesses, I highly recommend having the site coded by a professional. MikeMadison.Net specializes in personalized easy to use web pages. Content Management isn't for everyone, but it certainly makes life easy on anyone who uses it. Once the site is developed, the client is able to do all of their own updates and management without any further involvement from the developer. I try to keep in pretty steady contact with my clients to make sure everything is running smoothly, but in most cases once the site is finished my involvement is no longer necessary. To date, none of my clients have had any critical problems with the sites that I have delivered.
